A Boiling Springs man has been sentenced to life in prison for murder following his trial this week in Spartanburg County. James Bridges Byrd, 24, was tried and found guilty of murder in the death of 22-year-old Kush Patel, according to Seventh Circuit Solicitor Barry Barnette. Patel was found June 6, 2021, slumped over a couch at a home on Swain Avenue, investigators said. He was found to have multiple gunshot wounds including two gunshot entry wounds to his back, according to Barnette. Barnette said once Byrd was taken to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, he admitted drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana that night. He said Byrd also admitted to officers that he took LSD and Xanax in addition to the alcohol and marijuana. Byrd reportedly told officers that after consuming the LSD and Xanax he believed Patel was attacking him, so Byrd shot Patel. At the time of Bryd's arrest, Barnette described Byrd and Kush as "good friends."Barnette said at the trial this week, Byrd took the witness stand and provided testimony inconsistent with his interview with law enforcement. The murder was also witnessed by the homeowner who testified on behalf of the State, Barnette said.
