What are the lessons in grade 4? ›

What Do Fourth Graders Learn? In 4th grade, students will learn to use research tools to write reports. They will master addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills and start to explore simple geometry. They will read and create their own charts, graphs, and tables.

Fourth graders work hard during the day. They're being asked to do more things on their own than in earlier grades. They're expected to start using organization and time management skills. And they have to think critically and problem-solve.

At nine or ten years old, most kids are in the fourth grade. However, the exact age can vary slightly depending on when their birthday falls and school cut-off dates. Generally, a child will turn nine or ten during the fourth-grade year.

In fourth grade, students focus most on using all four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division - to solve multi-step word problems involving multi-digit numbers. Fourth-grade math extends their understanding of fractions, including equal (equivalent) fractions and ordering fractions.

Equivalent GCSE grades

The Government has said that grade 4 is a 'standard pass'. Grade 5 is a 'strong pass' and equivalent to a high C and low B on the old grading system.

In Grade 4, all students take the following required subjects: art, English language arts and literature, mathematics, music, physical education and wellness, science, and social studies. Students in Francophone schools or French immersion programs take a mandatory French language course.

Reading for 4th Graders

They will also learn to connect with different characters and understand their expressions through traditional tales and fables. Poetry will also make an appearance in the fourth grade. Your fourth graders' vocabulary will also develop, and they will explore more prefixes and suffixes.

Lessons in Grade 4 typically cover more advanced math concepts like multiplication and division, comprehensive language arts including reading and writing, basic sciences such as biology and physical science, social studies focusing on history and geography, and introductory technology and computer skills.
